This region stands out by its natural beauty and Bayahibe experiences a growing popularity. Bayahibe is a small fishing village with brightly colored houses and boats surrounded by a number of four and five star resorts situated at Dominicus and around the the beach of Bayahibe.
Today, many former fishermen are busy transporting tourists from all over the world to the dream island of Saona, which lies just 45 minutes by boat from Bayahibe. Bayahibe is the gateway to this nature reserve and snorkeling paradise, which forms part of the vast and protected Parque Nacional del Este with its overwhelming variety of natural beauty. Isla Saona is where the Bounty chocolate bar advertisment and parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean have been filmed.
The sea around the island is rich in flora and fauna, many species of birds and tropical fish exist and there are large areas where natural sandbars occur, with a depth down to just one meter (+- 3 ft). These sand banks are popular with the tourists. Where else can you stop hundreds of meters from the beach and can you get off at the waiste-deep waters to snorkel, drink a cuba-libre and view the native starfish in their natural habitat.
Saona Island is the Caribbean at its best, with sparkling white - palm fringed - beaches and with crystal clear turquoise waters. A heavenly place to relax and learn how to snorkel in the colorful underwater world. Often an excursion to Isla Saona is combined with visits to other attractions within the park, such as a trip by boat through the mangroves, snorkeling over a native coral reef, where countless colorful fish eat from your hands or with a trip to the island Catalinita.
The beach of Bayahibe lies in a bay on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, on the Caribbean Sea. The area has a tropical climate with year around sunshine and high temperatures. The best time to visit Bayahibe is between December and April and between June and August, when the weather is warm and dry and there are ideal conditions for an exotic beach holiday with plenty of watersports. Of all the holiday destinations in the Dominican Republic Bayahibe receives the least rainfall. In summer the temperatures reach an average of 32 °C with a high humidity during the late summer. In the rainy season (May and September-October) the sun always shines for an average of 8 hours per day!!!
A tip: do not pull too much from the icons on the right with clouds and thunderstorms. The weather is very localized and if there is anywhere rain in the range of the weather station a "rain icon" is posted. On the coast it is usually better.
